Simple Ways to Connect Batteries in a Series: 12 Steps
Connect batteries in series to boost voltage for your project with this comprehensive guide. Get essential tips on connections and safety
When connecting batteries in series, the general advice is to use batteries of the same ratings and the same make and model in order to minimize differences in exact voltage and amperage. Note, we say 'minimize', because even batteries coming off the same production line can vary slightly in these measurements. Another factor is battery age.
Choose a series connection to add voltage and make a battery bank. A series connection combines the voltage of the 2 connected batteries to create a bank of batteries that you can draw power from.
Connect the batteries in series To form a series connection, link each battery in sequence using jumper cables. Connect the negative (-) terminal of the first battery to the positive (+) terminal of the next battery, and continue this pattern until all batteries are connected.
Connecting batteries in series increases the voltage of a battery pack, but the AH rating (also known as Amp Hours) remains the same. To connect batteries in a series, a jumper wire connects a battery's negative terminal to another battery's positive terminal.
