Power Line Communication in Solar Applications
International standards and norms specify the frequency bands which can be used for power line communication. In general, there are two categories, narrowband - and broadband - PLC.
The multi-frequency grid-connected inverter topology is designed to improve power density and grid current quality while addressing the trade-off between switching frequency and power losses . Traditional grid-connected inverters rely on power filters to meet harmonic standards, but these filters increase system complexity, cost, and size.
Applying the appropriate communication technology to support grid requirements depends upon many factors beyond just the communication technology, how it is deployed (e.g., architecture) and operations. One method is to start with the grid services or processes needing support.
Figure 1 shows typical power line communication options implemented in different solar installations. These installations can be divided into communication on DC lines (red) and communication on AC lines (blue).
Unlike conventional fossil-fuel-based power plants, RESs generate power that depends heavily on environmental conditions. This dependency leads to fluctuations in power output and potential grid instability. Grid-connected inverters (GCIs) have emerged as a critical technology addressing these challenges.
