The common thread in these studies aiming to decarbonize power systems is the clear role BESS plays in supporting the integration of clean generation technologies, where they become essential in avoiding shortages and leveraging events of electricity surplus to be used in hours of critical need or requiring cheaper sources.
Our results indicate that BESS in BCS reduce total systems costs and support the development of higher shares of renewable energy technologies across all modeled scenarios, but does not eliminate curtailment in the optimization of the operational strategies.
Although auxiliary services were not analyzed in this work, considerations in storage capacity expansion allow for providing services such as ramp or frequency control which could further make the BESS options more profitable. The required reserve in Mexico is about 5 % per generator unit (i.e., storage), with a typical 15 min operation.
In this planning process, the effective use of inputs that account for variations of short- and long-term supply (e.g., inter-annual renewable energy resource availability) and demand (e.g., consumption across weather events) is critical, especially to properly dimension the need for BESS deployment .
